Caving

Caving_Mala_Boka_1The Kanin Mountain Range is riddled with limestone caves, known as a Karst topography. The neighboring Rombon plateau boasts the deepest sink hole in Slovenia and the 6th largest cave in the world. Its name is Cehi 2 and is estimated 1533m deep and 5291m long. The entrance to this cave is located over 2000m above sea level and was only discovered in 1991. Because of its dimensions and difficulty, this cave attracts many local and overseas expeditions. The final depth and length of this cave is yet to be confirmed, as it belongs to an even larger system of caves – which is still being explored.

We invite you to the hidden underworld via our caving tours. To begin with, we have organized two caving adventures:

Srnica Cave

Location: 3 km from Bovec

Srnica-1-10_r1Access: 15 minute walking trail

Duration: up to 5 hours including transportation time

Degree of Difficulty: Difficult

After turning left at the source of the Gljun creek we will undertake a 20 minute walk after which we will arrive at the entrance to a 704 meter system of underground caves. Waters have patiently created this landscape over hundreds of thousands of years. The cave system has two entrances, 63 vertical meters from each other and during heavy rains, when access is blocked, there is a beautiful waterfall that falls into a deep abyss. During these torrential rains, the cave turns into a water source and sprays water from the Kanin mountain range. The main attractions of this cave system are heart shaped fossil formations, megalontids, which decorate the dolomite limestone walls. Due to its relatively easy access, Srnica is perfectly located for an introductory meeting with the underground world and within her hidden bowels you will find proof of the history of our planet.

Little Boka Cave

Caving_Mala_Boka_3Location: 6 km from Bovec

Access: 15 minute walking trail

Duration: up to 5 hours including transportation time

Degree of Difficulty: Difficult

Little Boka is located a 30 minute walk away from the parking lot at the Boka bridge. The entrance into the Deep Cave is a sort of foyer to Little Boka and can be seen from the main road. It is situated in a steep section above a dry creek bed, which becomes filled with water, spewing from the cave during torrential storms. After enjoying a remarkable valley view, we enter Little Boka from this beautiful natural amphitheatre. This is a 1336 meter long cave system, which is suitable for entry level visitors. Kanin attracts many speleological groups, who strive to solve mysteries of the underground – these experts have proven that Little Boka is connected with much higher elevations on the plateaus of the Kanin mountain range. At 1319 meters, Little Boka is now proven to be the deepest explored cave system in Slovenia. However during this tour will not set any records of depth or height, but will focus on the ground floor of these inner skyscrapers and become explorers of the first section of the cave.  As far as the extreme explorers go – we will chat about their accomplishments over a hearty lunch.
